Silly Giants fans and sensationalist journalists started this entire spelling trend in the summer of 2011 after Eli, in an interview, claimed to be an elite quarterback. Their main support? “Can’t spell ‘ELITE’ without ‘ELI!’” In sports newsrooms and ESPN comment boards alike, the saying has become iconic.
